I hope that those radicalised realise that most UK people want a just peace in the Middle East so people of all faiths can live peaceably in mutual respect of each other.

Gaza Truce

Today it is announced that Egypt has brokered a long-term truce between Gaza and Israel. I hope this one holds and that Israel starts to treat the people of Gaza as real human beings for once. Of course, Hamas has to stop firing missiles into Israel. Is it too much to hope that Israel and the Palestinians to forge a real peace deal that would really last?

Gaza and Israel
Sorry to go on and on about this conflict, but it sickens me. Israel is the real aggressor here, not Hamas. Yes Hamas has been firing missiles at ever greater range into Israel, but Israel has treated the people of Palestine like the scum of the earth for as long as I can recall. The people of Gaza and the West Bank deserve much better.
It is in the best interests of both Israelis and Palestinians to negotiate real peace that is fair to all sides. Israel should stop building settlements in Palestinian territory and stop its divisive war on Gaza.
Is it any wonder the Jews are still hated? I hear anti-Semitic sentiment is on the increase. It does not surprise me.
Israel, the solution is in your hands. Elect a government that is serious about peace. Treat your neighbours respectfully, as you yourself would wish to be treated. Did WW2 not teach the Jewish people anything? WW2 was a great tragedy for the Jews of Europe, but why does Israel continue this hate?

D-day celebrations
The TV is full of D-Day anniversary celebrations from the Normandy beaches It is 70 years since it happened. It must have been a day filled with unbelievable fear, on a level I cannot begin to imagine, with the fear of being shot at any moment.
My stroke has left me more emotional than before: the thought of these brave men moved me to tears, as did thinking of my dear dad flying Lancasters in Bomber Command. In his lifetime I never once told him how brave he was, one of my greatest regrets. I do so hope their efforts were not in vane. We have had 70 years of peace in Europe, just about, with a few exceptions.
I do not have bad feelings towards the German people. Mankind has a nasty side and it could so easily been the other way around. We have all to work towards peace and reconciliation. The EC has a good side by helping to keep the peace.
I must stop bursting into tears.

Politics in Northern Ireland
Politics in Northern Ireland continues to puzzle me.
I am in no position to say whether or not Gerry Adams was in any way, shape or form involved in the murder in 1972 of Jean McConville. In many ways I hope he was not.
There is a kind of uneasy peace in the province. In many ways, the sectarian violence of a few years ago has gone, yet the fundamental sectarian bad feelings are still there simmering just beneath the surface. A visit to Northern Ireland still has reminders of the past: the barriers between Catholic and Protestant areas are still there in Belfast, the police stations still have huge barrier fences etc. The politics is divided on sectarian lines even now, not politics in the sense we know it elsewhere in the UK.
It seems to me very little would be needed to change the current (uneasy) peace back to violence.
Why cannot the ordinary folk of this most beautiful province cast the past aside and really embrace peace? True peace can only come when forgiveness has a chance to flourish. We are still some way from this.
